FreeNo uploadNo signupWorks offline

For an online UK passport application, GOV.UK asks for a colour digital photo at least 600 pixels wide and 750 tall, between 50 KB and 10 MB, showing your head, shoulders and upper body against a plain light background. This tool gives you exactly that – not a tight crop.

Rules from the notice

Besides the size, the notice asks for:

  • At least 600 wide × 750 tall px, 50 KB – 10 MB
  • Do not crop tightly: head, shoulders and upper body
  • Plain light background, colour, taken in the last month

Do not crop

GOV.UK crops the digital photo itself, so it asks you not to: the photo should show your head, shoulders and upper body. The tool keeps that framing.

Printed UK passport photos

Paper applications need two identical printed photos of 45 × 35 mm with the head 29–34 mm. Choose “United Kingdom – passport (35×45 mm)” in the Passport Photo Maker for the print size and a 4 × 6 sheet.

Limitations

  • Follows the notice named on this page; a newer notification can change the rules – check yours before applying.
  • Checks size, file size and format, not whether the photo itself (expression, lighting, how recent) meets the rules.
  • Background whitening works best with a plain, light wall behind you.

Privacy

Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.
