Rules from the notice

Besides the size, the notice asks for:

  • At least 600 × 750 px, portrait
  • JPG, 50 KB – 6 MB
  • Head, shoulders and upper body; plain light background; not your passport photo

Not your passport photo

The ETA photo must be a new photo: not a scan, not a photo of a photo, and not the same photo as in your passport. Children under 6 do not need to look at the camera, and babies may have their eyes closed.

Limitations

  • Follows the notice named on this page; a newer notification can change the rules – check yours before applying.
  • Checks size, file size and format, not whether the photo itself (expression, lighting, how recent) meets the rules.
  • Background whitening works best with a plain, light wall behind you.

Privacy

Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.
