The DS-160 needs a square digital photo between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, as a JPEG of up to 240 KB, with your head filling 50–69 % of the height. Take a photo against a plain wall and get a file that meets those rules, with a white background and a check.

Official sizes
From US Department of State digital image requirements. Pixel sizes are only listed where the notice sets one.
| Upload | Pixel size | File size |
|---|---|---|
| Photo | 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 px | up to 240 KB |
Rules from the notice
Besides the size, the notice asks for:
- Square, 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 px
- JPEG, up to 240 KB
- Head 50–69 % of the height; white or off-white background; no glasses; taken in the last 6 months
Head and eye position
The head, measured from the chin to the top of the hair, must be 50–69 % of the image height, and the eyes 56–69 % of the height from the bottom. The tool finds your face and sets both, then measures the head size of the result.
Limitations
- Follows the notice named on this page; a newer notification can change the rules – check yours before applying.
- Checks size, file size and format, not whether the photo itself (expression, lighting, how recent) meets the rules.
- Background whitening works best with a plain, light wall behind you.
Privacy
Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.
