Remove the location from Mac photos
FreeNo uploadNo signupWorks offline
A Mac does not add location to photos - it has nothing to add it from. What it does is faithfully keep whatever your phone or camera put there when the files were imported, which is why a photo that has been through a Mac is usually carrying its full original metadata. Drop the photos here to strip the coordinates and the rest of the metadata before you send them. Everything happens on your device, which is the only sensible way to handle a file you are trying to make less revealing.
How to use Remove Photo Location (Mac)

- Choose or drop the Mac photos – a whole folder is fine.
- Look at the metadata found, including the location, before it is removed.
- Click Remove metadata and download the clean copies.
Supported formats
- Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF
- Output: Same as input (JPG, PNG, WebP), JPG (for HEIC)
Preview can do this without any download
macOS has had this built in for years and almost nobody knows. Open the photo in Preview, then Tools → Show Inspector, and pick the tab with the ⓘ. If the file has coordinates there is a GPS tab with a map and a Remove Location Info button at the bottom. It works on one file at a time, and it removes the location rather than the rest of the metadata.
- Preview → Tools → Show Inspector → GPS tab → Remove Location Info
- Photos app: select, then Image → Location → Hide Location
- Neither one touches the date, the camera model or the exposure data
One file at a time, and only the coordinates
Preview’s button is genuinely useful for a single photo, and tedious for forty. It also leaves everything that is not GPS: when the photo was taken, what took it, the serial number some cameras write, and the editing history. This page takes a whole folder at once and removes the lot, still without the files leaving your Mac - the processing happens in the browser tab, not on a server.
What is actually removed
GPS coordinates and altitude, the date and time the photo was taken, the make and model of the device, lens and exposure settings, the serial number some cameras write, and any editing history. For JPG, PNG and WebP these blocks are cut out and the image data is left untouched, so there is no quality loss at all. The colour profile is kept by default so the picture still looks right.
Limitations
- HEIC, AVIF and GIF files are re-encoded (as JPG or AVIF) to remove their metadata.
- Metadata a service has already recorded from a photo you uploaded earlier cannot be removed from your copy.
- Platform menus move between versions; the routes described here are where to look, not a promise about a particular release.
Privacy
Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Remove Location Info button?
In Preview: open the image, choose Tools → Show Inspector, and select the GPS tab. The button is at the bottom of that tab. It only appears when the photo actually has coordinates.
Does Photos “Hide Location” delete it?
It hides the location in your library rather than guaranteeing it is gone from an exported copy. Strip the exported file if it is going to someone else.
Can I do several at once?
Here, yes - drop a whole folder and download the cleaned copies together. Preview’s own button handles one file at a time.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. They are opened and rewritten inside your browser, and nothing is sent to a server - which rather matters for a tool whose whole job is removing the places you have been.
Is it free?
Yes – free, with no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you clean at once.
