Make a signature with a transparent background
FreeNo uploadNo signupWorks offline
Photograph your signature on paper and get back just the ink, with the paper gone - ready to drop onto a contract, a form or a letter without a white box around it. It runs entirely on your device, which matters: a signature is the one image you should never upload to a stranger.
How to use Signature to Transparent PNG

- Sign in black ink on plain white paper.
- Photograph it from straight above in good daylight, or scan it.
- Drop it here - the paper is whitened, then removed, and the image trimmed to the ink.
- Download the PNG and place it wherever you need it.
Supported formats
- Input: JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP
- Output: PNG (transparent)
How the paper is removed
This is not AI background removal and does not need to be. A signature is dark ink on light paper, so the paper can be found by brightness alone, which is both faster and far more reliable than a model guessing at a subject. The paper is whitened first to fix the grey or cream cast every phone photo has, then each pixel is made transparent in proportion to how light it is. The soft edge of the stroke keeps a soft edge instead of turning into a jagged cut-out, which is what makes a signature look real rather than pasted.
Why this must not be uploaded
Your signature is a credential. Tools that remove backgrounds in the cloud receive a clean, cropped, transparent copy of it and keep it on their servers for as long as their policy says - sometimes longer. This page never sends it anywhere; open your browser’s network tab while you use it and you will see no upload, because there is no upload endpoint.
Getting a clean result
Use black or dark blue ink, never pencil - pencil is grey and the tool cannot tell it from shadow. Photograph straight down, not at an angle, so the paper is evenly lit; a shadow across one corner reads as ink. If the result looks faint, sign again with a thicker pen rather than turning the threshold up, which will drag paper texture in with the ink.
Using it in a PDF
To sign a document rather than produce an image, the Sign PDF tool places a drawn or uploaded signature directly onto the page. This is a visual signature, like signing a printout - it is not a cryptographic digital signature, and some legal and official processes require the latter.
Limitations
- Needs dark ink on light paper - pencil, faint ink or a coloured background will not separate cleanly.
- A shadow across the paper can be read as ink; photograph in even light.
- Produces an image of a signature, not a cryptographic digital signature.
Privacy
Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make my signature transparent?
Photograph it on white paper and drop it here. The paper is removed and you get a PNG with a transparent background.
How do I remove the white background from a signature?
That is what this page does. Brightness tells ink from paper, so it works without an AI model and without uploading your signature.
How do I make a signature PNG for a document?
Sign on white paper in black ink, photograph it from directly above, drop it here, and download the PNG. It drops into Word, Google Docs, a PDF or an email with nothing behind it.
Can I use a photo from my phone?
Yes, and that is the normal case. Good light and a straight-on angle matter more than the camera.
Why is my signature coming out faint or patchy?
Usually pencil, a thin pen, or uneven light. Use black ink, press firmly, and photograph in daylight without a shadow across the page.
Is this a legally valid digital signature?
No. This produces an image of your signature. A cryptographic digital signature is a different thing, and where one is required an image will not do.
Is my image uploaded?
No. It is processed in your browser, on your device, and never sent to a server.
Is it free?
Yes - free, no signup, no watermark, no limit.
