Remove the location from iPhone and iPad photos
FreeNo uploadNo signupWorks offline
An iPhone writes your GPS position into every photo the moment you take it, as long as the camera has location permission - which it asks for the first time you open it and most people grant without much thought. The coordinates are accurate to a few metres, so a photo taken indoors points at your home. Drop the photos here to strip the coordinates and the rest of the metadata before you send them. Everything happens on your device, which is the only sensible way to handle a file you are trying to make less revealing.
How to use Remove Photo Location (iPhone)

- Choose or drop the iPhone photos – a whole folder is fine.
- Look at the metadata found, including the location, before it is removed.
- Click Remove metadata and download the clean copies.
Supported formats
- Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF
- Output: Same as input (JPG, PNG, WebP), JPG (for HEIC)
What iOS already gives you
iOS has the best built-in answer of any platform here, and it is worth knowing even if you use this page instead. Select the photo in Photos, tap Share, and then tap Options at the top of the share sheet: there is a Location switch, and turning it off strips the coordinates from that share only. The original in your library keeps its location, which is usually what you want - the map in Photos still works, and only the copy you send is clean.
- Photos → select → Share → Options → Location off, then send
- To stop it being recorded at all: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → Never
- Screenshots never contain GPS data, because nothing located them
What the share sheet does not cover
The Options switch applies to that one share. Save the photo somewhere else, AirDrop it, back it up, or send it with an app that reads your library directly, and the full metadata travels with it. The date and time, your iPhone model and the camera settings also stay even when Location is switched off - that switch is about coordinates, not about metadata in general. Dropping the file here removes the lot, from whatever device you happen to be holding.
What is actually removed
GPS coordinates and altitude, the date and time the photo was taken, the make and model of the device, lens and exposure settings, the serial number some cameras write, and any editing history. For JPG, PNG and WebP these blocks are cut out and the image data is left untouched, so there is no quality loss at all. The colour profile is kept by default so the picture still looks right.
Limitations
- HEIC, AVIF and GIF files are re-encoded (as JPG or AVIF) to remove their metadata.
- Metadata a service has already recorded from a photo you uploaded earlier cannot be removed from your copy.
- Platform menus move between versions; the routes described here are where to look, not a promise about a particular release.
Privacy
Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.
Frequently asked questions
Does turning off Location Services delete the data already in my photos?
No. It stops new photos being tagged; every photo you have already taken keeps the coordinates it was taken with. Those have to be stripped from the files themselves.
Does this work on an iPhone?
Yes. The page runs in Safari or Chrome on iOS exactly as it does on a computer - choose the photos from your library, and the cleaned copies are saved back to Files or Photos.
Are HEIC photos handled?
Yes. iPhones save HEIC by default, and because metadata cannot be cut out of a HEIC without rebuilding it, those are converted to JPG - which is usually what you want for sending anyway.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. They are opened and rewritten inside your browser, and nothing is sent to a server - which rather matters for a tool whose whole job is removing the places you have been.
Is it free?
Yes – free, with no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you clean at once.
