How to use Image to Text (OCR)

Image to Text (OCR) – Extract text from photos and screenshots. Free, no upload.
  1. Choose or drop your images.
  2. Click Extract text.
  3. Copy the text or download it as a .txt file.

Supported formats

  • Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, BMP
  • Output: Text (.txt)

Best results

Use sharp, well-lit images with the text straight and at least 20 pixels tall. Screenshots and scans work best; photos taken at an angle or in low light give more errors.

Language

Recognition is tuned for English (Latin alphabet). Text in other scripts is not recognised.

Limitations

  • English / Latin-alphabet text only.
  • Handwriting and stylised fonts are recognised poorly.

Privacy

Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.

Frequently asked questions

Does it read handwriting?

Clear block handwriting sometimes works, but the engine is designed for printed text.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The Tesseract OCR engine (about 15 MB, cached after the first use) runs in your browser.

Is it free?

Yes – free with no signup, no watermark and no daily limit. You can process many images at once.
