Discord emoji size

FreeNo uploadNo signupWorks offline

Discord rejects a emoji that is too large, and the message it gives you says nothing about how much too large. Drop a picture here and get the right size – 128 × 128 px, square, as PNG with transparency kept – each compressed until it fits under the 256 KB ceiling. The figures come from Discord's own documentation, linked below.

What Discord actually requires

Read from Discord's own documentation rather than from other tools. Discord states the file-size limit and the accepted formats, and says nothing about pixels – so the size below is a sensible target rather than a rule, and is marked as such.

The byte limit, not just the pixels

Discord states one limit and it is the only hard one: the file must be under 256 KB. Getting the pixels right and ignoring the bytes is the usual reason an upload is still rejected after you have resized it: a detailed PNG at 128 px square can easily exceed the limit. Here the ceiling is given to the encoder, so the file is compressed until it fits rather than handed to you to be refused.

Square, and cropped from the middle

Discord only accepts square emojis. A picture that is not square is cropped to a square from the centre rather than squashed, because a squashed face reads as broken and a cropped one usually does not. If the part you want is off-centre, crop it first and then come back – the result is better than anything an automatic crop can do.

Transparency, and what cannot be done here

The output is PNG, so a transparent background stays transparent – which is most of the point of a emoji. Animation is the limitation: Discord accepts animated GIFs, and this tool cannot make one. It reads the first frame of an animated file and gives you a still image. For an animated emoji you need a GIF editor.

Limitations

  • Animated GIFs are not produced; an animated input is reduced to its first frame.
  • Non-square pictures are cropped from the centre.
  • Figures follow Discord – How to Add Custom Emojis on Discord; platforms change their limits, so check yours if an upload is refused.
  • Discord does not state a pixel size, so that figure is a display size rather than a requirement.

Privacy

Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Discord emoji?

Discord does not publish a pixel size – it states only that the file must be under 256 KB. 128 × 128 px is the size it displays them at, which is why every tool uses it.

Why does Discord still reject my file?

Almost always the byte size rather than the pixels. Discord states one limit and it is the only hard one: the file must be under 256 KB.

Can I make an animated one?

Not here. This produces a still PNG, and reads only the first frame of an animated file. Discord does accept animation, so you will need a GIF editor for that.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes. The output is PNG, so transparent areas stay transparent.

Is my image uploaded?

No. It is resized and compressed inside your browser, and nothing is sent to a server.

Is it free?

Yes – free, no signup, no watermark, no limit.
