Why MozJPEG?

MozJPEG is an improved JPEG encoder from Mozilla. It uses smarter quantization and progressive encoding to make files about 10–20% smaller than standard encoders at the same quality, while remaining fully compatible with every device.

Recommended quality

85–90%: archive and print quality. 70–80%: the sweet spot for websites and email. 50–60%: very small files for thumbnails, with some visible softening.

Limitations

  • Images that are already highly compressed may barely shrink.
  • Animated images are compressed as a single frame.

Privacy

Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my images get?

Photos typically shrink by 50–80% with no visible difference. Images that were already heavily compressed shrink less.

Will compressing reduce the image dimensions?

No – the width and height stay the same unless you choose a target size that can only be reached by also scaling the image down (you are told when that happens).

How do I compress a JPEG to 100 KB or 50 KB?

Use Compress Image to 100 KB or Compress Image to 50 KB – they find the best quality that fits under the limit automatically.

Is the camera information kept?

No – compressed JPGs are re-encoded, which drops EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location. That also protects your privacy.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly versions of the same codecs desktop apps use. Your photos never leave your device.

Is it free?

Yes – free with no signup, no watermark and no daily limit. You can process many images at once.
