  2. Drag and zoom to place the circle.
  3. Click Crop.
  4. Download the PNG - the area outside the circle is transparent.

Supported formats

  • Input: JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP
  • Output: PNG

Why the result is a PNG

Only a format with an alpha channel can store "nothing here". JPG cannot, so a circular JPG always has a rectangle of some colour behind it - usually white, which shows as an ugly box on a coloured background. The result here is a PNG so the corners are genuinely empty.

When you actually need a circular crop

Most apps that display round pictures apply their own circular mask to whatever square you give them - WhatsApp, Instagram, Slack and Teams all do. For those, a square crop is enough and a circular PNG gains you nothing. A genuinely round image matters when you are placing it yourself: a headshot in a document or slide, an avatar in a web page, a logo over a coloured block. In those cases a square with white corners is immediately obvious, and a transparent circle is not.

Leave a margin

Faces and logos cropped tight to the circle look cramped, and any detail near the edge is the first thing lost if the image is later masked again by an app. Zoom out a little so there is space around the subject - a circle shows less than the square it came from, so what looks generous while cropping usually looks right in the result.

Limitations

  • The output is always a PNG, which is larger than the equivalent JPG.
  • Transparency is lost if you later convert the result to JPG.

Privacy

Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a picture into a circle?

Drop it here, position the circle over the part you want, and click Crop. You get a PNG with transparent corners.

Will the background be transparent?

Yes. The area outside the circle is fully transparent, which is why the file is a PNG rather than a JPG.

Can I make a round profile picture for Instagram or WhatsApp?

You can, but you usually do not need to - those apps apply their own circular mask. A square crop is enough. Use this when you need the round image itself.

Is my image uploaded?

No. It is processed in your browser, on your device, and never sent to a server.

Is it free?

Yes - free, no signup, no watermark, no limit.
