How to use Protect PDF with Password

  1. Select a PDF.
  2. Enter a password and confirm it.
  3. Choose permissions.
  4. Encrypt and download – then test opening the file.

Supported formats

  • Input: PDF
  • Output: PDF (encrypted)

Strength

Use a long, unique passphrase. The standard PDF encryption is only as strong as the password chosen. There is no password recovery – if you forget it, the file cannot be opened.

Permissions

Permission flags (no printing, no copying) are honoured by well-behaved viewers but can be bypassed by software that ignores them; the open password is the real protection.

Limitations

  • Passwords cannot be recovered.
  • Permission flags rely on viewer compliance.

Privacy

Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.

Frequently asked questions

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. Encryption runs in your browser; nothing is transmitted.

Which encryption is used?

The PDF standard security handler as implemented by the library; test the result in your target viewer.
