Split an image for an Instagram grid

FreeNo uploadNo signupWorks offline

A grid puzzle is one picture cut into tiles that reassemble on your profile. Drop the picture, choose how many columns and rows, and the tiles come back labelled by position. The part everyone gets wrong is the posting order, so that is spelled out below rather than left to you.

How to use Instagram Grid Splitter

Instagram Grid Splitter – Cut one image into a 3×3 or 3×N profile grid. Free, no upload.
  1. Drop the picture you want to cut up.
  2. Choose the columns and rows – 3 columns is a profile grid.
  3. Download the ZIP and post the tiles in reverse order.

Supported formats

  • Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF
  • Output: JPG or PNG (one per tile), ZIP

Post them backwards

A profile grid fills from the top left, but the newest post goes there – so the tiles have to be uploaded in reverse. The last tile of the bottom row goes up first and the top-left tile goes up last. The filenames are labelled by row and column (r1c1 is top left), and the result tells you which file to post first. Getting this backwards is the usual way a grid puzzle ends up mirrored.

Nothing is lost at the edges

The cut points are rounded from the exact fractions, so a picture whose dimensions do not divide evenly by the grid keeps its full width and height – the tiles differ by a pixel instead of a row or column being trimmed away. On a puzzle that is meant to join up, a trimmed edge is visible.

Tiles are not square unless your picture is

Instagram crops profile thumbnails to a square. A 3 × 3 grid cut from a picture that is not itself square produces rectangular tiles, and each will be cropped again when it is displayed. Crop your picture to the right overall shape first – three columns of square tiles means a square picture, three columns and two rows means a 3:2 one.

Limitations

  • Up to 10 columns and 10 rows.
  • Cutting only – tiles are not resized or padded to squares.
  • Animated files are reduced to their first frame.

Privacy

Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.

Frequently asked questions

What order do I post the tiles in?

Reverse. The bottom-right tile first, the top-left tile last, because the newest post takes the top-left position on your profile.

Why are my tiles not square?

Because the picture is not the right overall shape. For square tiles in a 3 × 3 grid the picture itself has to be square; crop it before splitting.

Can I do more than 3 columns?

Yes, up to 10 each way here. Three is what a profile grid shows, so anything else is for a different purpose.

Do the tiles line up exactly?

Yes. The cuts come from the exact fractions, so the tiles reassemble into the original with nothing missing.

Is my image uploaded?

No. It is cut up inside your browser and the pieces are saved to your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Is it free?

Yes – free, no signup, no watermark, and the pieces come without anything stamped on them.
