What is WebP?

WebP is an image format made by Google that websites use because it is smaller than JPG and PNG. When you save an image from a website you often get a .webp file, which some apps, editors and upload forms do not accept. Converting it makes the image usable everywhere.

Best settings for websites

A quality of 75–85% gives WebP images that look like the original JPG but load faster. Every current browser supports WebP.

Limitations

  • Animated images are converted as a single still frame.
  • Very large images (over 100 megapixels) are refused to protect your device’s memory.

Privacy

Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.
