What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It is even smaller than WebP at the same quality, and many websites now serve it, but older software cannot open it.
Limitations
- Animated images are converted as a single still frame.
- Very large images (over 100 megapixels) are refused to protect your device’s memory.
Privacy
Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.
Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I open AVIF files?
AVIF is a newer format that older software does not support yet. Converting to JPG fixes that.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly versions of the same codecs desktop apps use. Your photos never leave your device.
Is it free?
Yes – free with no signup, no watermark and no daily limit. You can process many images at once.
Can I convert many images at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many images as you like; each is processed on your device and you can download them one by one or together as a ZIP.
