Remove silence from a recording

FreeNo uploadNo signupWorks offline

Strip the dead air out of a recording – the gap before you started talking, the pause while you found your notes, the silence at the end – while leaving the short pauses that make speech sound like speech. It runs on your device, so an unreleased recording stays yours.

Why short pauses are kept

The usual complaint about automatic silence removal is that the result sounds breathless: every gap between sentences is gone and the speaker never seems to draw breath. Pauses are part of speech, so only stretches longer than a set length are cut, and a little silence is left at each join rather than splicing one word directly onto the next. Gentle cuts only long gaps; Tight is for a recording with a lot of dead air you want gone.

The threshold follows your recording

What counts as silence depends on the recording, not on a fixed number. A phone voice memo in a kitchen has a noise floor twenty decibels above a treated studio, and a tool with an absolute threshold either cuts nothing in one case or cuts the speech in the other. The level here is measured against the recording’s own loud passages, judged by the 90th percentile so a single cough does not set the standard.

Every cut is faded

Joining two pieces of audio at arbitrary points produces a click, because the waveform jumps. Each cut is crossfaded over a few milliseconds – inaudible as a fade, but enough to remove the click entirely.

Why this is not an upload

Podcast and transcription services need your recording on their servers, which for an unreleased episode, a client interview or a confidential meeting is a real decision. This decodes and edits in your browser. There is no upload endpoint and no queue to wait in.

Limitations

  • Judges silence by level, so a loud, constant background hum can read as speech - remove the noise first if so.
  • Very long recordings need enough memory to decode; an hour of audio is comfortable, several hours may not be.
  • Music with quiet passages is not a good fit; this is built for speech.

Privacy

Files you choose are read into your browser’s memory and processed on your device; they are not uploaded to a server. Temporary download links are released after use, and the offline cache never stores your documents. More about privacy and limits.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove silence from an audio file?

Drop it here and click Remove silence. Stretches quieter than your recording’s own speech, and longer than the threshold, are cut; short pauses stay.

Will it make my podcast sound rushed?

Not on Gentle or Balanced, which keep the pauses between sentences. Tight is deliberately aggressive and is better for raw dictation than for conversation.

Does it remove background noise too?

No - that is a different job. Use Remove Background Noise for hiss, hum and room tone; this removes silent stretches of time.

Can I use it on an interview with two voices?

Yes. It works on the recording as a whole, so gaps where neither person is speaking are cut.

How much will it shorten my file?

That depends entirely on the recording; the result tells you how many seconds were removed and across how many joins.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. It is decoded and edited in your browser, which matters for anything unreleased or confidential.

Is it free?

Yes - free, no signup, no watermark, no limit.
