Convert a PDF from US Letter to A4

FreeNo uploadNo signupWorks offline

US Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm and A4 is 210 × 297 mm, so a document written for one does not fit the other exactly. Each page is placed on a A4 page and scaled to 97.3 % of its original size, which is as large as it can be without cropping. The text stays vector, so it is still sharp and selectable, and the file never leaves your device.

What changes between US Letter and A4

A4 is 5.9 mm narrower and 17.6 mm taller than US Letter. Fitting keeps the proportions, so the width runs out first and decides the scale – 97.3 % – while the other dimension gains a margin. Nothing is cropped and nothing is re-flowed.

The two sizes, as their standards define them
SizeMillimetresInchesUsed in
US Letter215.9 × 279.4 mm8.5 × 11 inthe ANSI size used in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines
A4210 × 297 mm8.27 × 11.69 inthe ISO 216 size used by every country except the United States, Canada and a few others

Your page breaks stay where they are

This resizes pages; it does not re-flow the document. A paragraph that started at the top of page 4 still starts at the top of page 4, and a table that fitted on one page still fits. That is usually what you want when a portal or a printer rejects the paper size but the document itself is finished – and it is the difference between this and re-exporting from Word, which would re-flow everything.

Why the two directions are not the same

US Letter to A4 scales to 97.3 %, but A4 back to US Letter scales to 94.1 %. The two sizes differ by 5.9 mm across and 17.6 mm down, and fitting is decided by whichever gap is proportionally larger. Converting one way and then back does not return the original size – it scales twice, so set the size once from the original file where you can.

Limitations

  • Links and form fields on resized pages are not interactive in the copy.
  • Pages are scaled, not re-flowed: line and page breaks stay exactly where the original put them.
  • Scaling twice (there and back) compounds, so the result is smaller than the original.

Frequently asked questions

What size is A4?

210 × 297 mm, or 8.27 × 11.69 in. US Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm (8.5 × 11 in).

Will the text get blurry?

No. The page content is placed as a vector form and scaled, not rasterised, so text stays sharp at any zoom and remains selectable and searchable.

Will my margins change?

Yes, visually. Everything on the page is scaled by the same 97.3 %, so the printed margins scale with it, and the top and bottom gain extra white space because that dimension is not the limiting one.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is opened and rewritten in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

Is it free?

Yes – free, with no signup, no watermark and no page limit.
